Salty by Ps Michael Podhaczky

Mark 9:49-50, contains two verses whose meaning has been widely disputed. They mention people seasoned with fire, the quality of salt, being salty and having peace with one another. So, what might all this imply? Firstly, consult the immediate context (vv33-48). In earlier verses, we read of Jesus’ disciples debating who was the greatest between them, while in Capernaum (vv33,34). So in response, Jesus used a little child to illustrate the kingdom perspective of greatness (vv36,37). Apparently, the disciples did not understand what Jesus said since; they then displayed their prejudiced hearts (v38). So Jesus rebuked and taught them regarding kingdom greatness again, also speaking of its true value (vv39-48). Notice in verse 42 that Jesus stressed the matter of “the little ones” again.

Consequently, this regulated the context for Jesus’ application found in vv39-50.

Secondly, Jesus took what He said in vv33-48 and applied it through the illustrations of people seasoned with fire, the value of salt, being salty and having peace with each other. The illustration of being seasoned - or salted - with fire in v39, links back to vv43-48, but also forward to; the usefulness, and necessity of salt for seasoning the believer.

Salt has strong flavour; however, the right amount actually enhances the taste of the food, not overpowering it. Likewise, Jesus aims to enhance the kingdom life within His followers and burn off anything that is not of kingdom value. Therefore, having the evidence of seasoning amongst yourselves, demonstrated through living in peace with each other, reveals this kingdom principle.

Are you living a life seasoned with a fire? A fire fierce enough to burn off what is of no use? Can others see/taste the salty quality of your life, and are you living in peace with those around you?
