Jesus, the ultimate ancestor by Ps Michael Podhaczky

Jesus, the ultimate ancestor

Matthew in his gospel recorded Jesus as the ultimate ancestor of Abraham and King David. “This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham: (Matt 1:1 NLT). This written account of Jesus’ generations draws our attention to (Gen 5:1), where we read ‘This is the written account of the ancestry of Adam.’

According to Matthew, Jesus is the ancestor of King David, pointing the reader back to David, and the progressive redemptive covenant history of Israel. It links David with Jesus the Messiah, the main character and central theme, of Matthew’s gospel. Matthew presented Jesus as the legal King and ancestor of King David, with the legal right to the throne of King David. That is, the Davidic (2 Sam 7:12,13,16) progression of the eternal covenant. The expression “The ancestor of David” occurs nine times in the Book of Matthew (1:1; 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 20:30,31; 21:9,15; 22:42). It is interesting that Jesus Christ & David are linked at the beginning and the end of the NT (cf. Matt 1:1; Rev 22:16).

Then Matthew declares Jesus as the ultimate ancestor of Abraham. He is the fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant. The verse also points the reader back to Abraham a foundational person within the redemptive eternal covenant history of Israel (Gen 12:1-3; 15:18; 17:2) progression. Jesus is descended from the seed of the patriarch Abraham (Matt 1:2,16,17, see also Lk 1:73; Heb 6:13,14; Gen 22:16,17; also compare Gen 12:3; 22:18; Gal 3:16).

So, the covenant with Abraham was fulfilled in Christ, and God fulfilled His promise to David, in Christ. Jesus is the rightful and ultimate ancestor of Abraham, and the legal King of David’s throne. So, sons and daughters, you are in His family as heirs of Christ ruling, and reigning with Him. Rejoice at (Matt 1:1), as this is the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise to Abraham and David, because you are part of the benefits & and blessings in Jesus Christ.
