Jesus' Virgin Birth and Salvation by Ps Michael Podhaczky

The Bible says that Jesus was born of a virgin and incarnate. But do you know the difference between the incarnation and the virgin birth? The incarnation is that Christ took on human nature and body. Whereas, the virgin birth maintains that Jesus was miraculously conceived in Mary’s womb (without a human father), by the supernatural influence of the Holy Spirit (cf. Matt 1:16,18, 20, 23, 25; Lk 1:27,34-35; 2:5; 3:23; Gal 4:4; Is 7:14; 9:6).

The instant the Holy Spirit miraculously conceived Jesus in Mary’s virgin womb; both His human and divine features were incarnate. Thus, Mary became pregnant through the supernatural influence of the Holy Spirit. It was not as a product of any sexual act between God and Mary. Hence, the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit guaranteed the true divinity and humanity of Christ.

The result of this is that salvation is supernatural, since the virgin birth of Jesus Christ was supernatural. It highlights the supernatural uniqueness of Jesus as the Saviour. The virgin birth also emphasises our helplessness to initiate even the first step in the process of our salvation. It likewise reminds us that salvation is a gift of grace. Even Mary, who displayed godly qualities such as faith and dedication, was still a sinful person sovereignly chosen by God (Lk 1:38, 46-55). So, the virgin birth is evidence of the power and sovereignty of God over nature, resulting in the coming of the Saviour and the gift of salvation.
