Resurrection Life
“Jesus
[said]… “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone
who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and
believes in me will never ever die.”” (John 11:25-26 NLT)
The
Gospel of John presents Jesus Christ
as the giver of life (i.e. John 1:4). John’s
revelation was that God had not only granted humanity the gift of physical life
but had also invested into every person spiritual
life. Humanity was originally created to contain a vibrant spiritual coupling
with the Spirit of God. That intimate spiritual connection was expressed
through relationship with Him at the
beginning of human existence but destroyed through the disobedience of Adam
& Eve (ref: Genesis 1-3).
Throughout
the preceding generations, that spiritual relationship was now expressed
through obedience and sacrifice according to the Law of Moses. The Gospel of
John describes how Jesus Christ came to restore
the relationship back to its original design. It took His death to accomplish
and the resurrection was the proof
of the establishment of a New Covenant with humanity (i.e. 1 Corinthians 15:12-20). We now live in the era of the resurrected Christ who
offers everyone resurrection life.
From John’s Gospel we see that:
·
This is the life Jesus offers
to Nicodemus, the religious leader
who seemed to have it all (3:16).
·
This is the life he offered to the woman
at the well, whose life was so empty (4:13, 14).
·
This is the life he offered to multitudes
after he fed them with bread (6:35).
·
This is the life he offered to the worshippers
in Jerusalem at the Feast of Tabernacles (7:37,38).
·
This is the life he offered to a man
born blind and those who were like him spiritually (8:12).
·
This is the life he offered to those who wanted to be in God's flock (10:10).
Resurrection life is more than a
refreshed or revitalised physical existence. Jesus himself said: “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word
and believes Him who sent me has eternal
life and will not be condemned; he has crossed
over from death to life.” (John 5:24)
This
incredibly powerful statement by Jesus
that he is “…the resurrection and the
life” compels us to recognise the importance of this Easter season we are about to embark. Easter affects us all, even
if we refuse to acknowledge it. Jesus Christ is our Redeemer from a life destined for death. The bible confirms that “God has
given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” (1 John 5:11b)
The primary purpose of the earthly lifetime
of Jesus Christ was to bring you and me back
to life. Let’s ensure we are celebrating
Easter with a clear understanding of what Jesus Christ has accomplished for
us and that His resurrection life
has set us free.
