The pivot point in this psalm comes when Asaph takes his
eyes from his own issues and problems and places them upon the proven goodness
of God. That goodness had been seen over the years of his life. As he reminded
himself of the interventions of God; the answers to prayer, the songs of
praise, the times of great rejoicing, his thoughts and focus changed. Faith in
God changed his perspective, and he then recalls "...Your road led through
the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was
there!" (Psalms 77:19 NLT). His current problems were salvageable even
through the secret doorway of faith. God would make a way where there was no
way!
How often do I allow the current trials, pressures and
stress to distract my gaze from the proven power of God over my life? Far too
often. Reading back over my devotional journey allows me to regain perspective
of what God has already brought me through and allows my spirit to reason
"...if he could do it then, why couldn't he do it now? The only thing that
has changed has been my position toward him". The pivot point comes to me,
like it did with Asaph, when I shift my gaze from the impossibilities facing me
to the One who is able to show me the pathway no one even knew was there!
Thank you Father for the consistency of your presence. May
my inconsistent heart be awakened regularly to the slight shifts of my
attention toward my own strength and abilities, which inevitably lead me into
gullies I never meant to wander. Holy Spirit, be my alarm when you recognise my
course change, and bring me back to viewing everything through the lens of my
Father’s unchangeable nature.
