Joseph and Supernatural Wisdom by Pastor Michael Podhaczky

In Genesis 37-50, there are some practical examples of Joseph using supernatural wisdom his life. This wisdom, he outworked in everyday situations. There are various examples that stand out here in these chapters. But some are:

- In the running of Potiphar's household affairs, he was happy with his work: Gen 39:1-6
- This was also the case with the time he spent in prison: Gen 39:21-23
- The interpreting of the two officers (the chief cupbearer’s and bakers) dreams: Gen 40:6-8, 12, 18 & 20

- The interpreting of Pharaoh’s dreams and God-given interpretations: Gen 41:15, 16, 25 & 32
- Joseph uses wisdom in dealing with the famine situation: Gen 47:13-26; cf. 41:33-36

Joseph stands out as he uses supernatural wisdom in every area of his work. This is extended to the royal court of Pharaoh, when we are told of the remarkable rise and success of Joseph as an Egyptian courtier under God’s guidance (Gen 40-41).  He was able to give sound advice at the right time, interpret dreams, and respond to certain situations with godly wisdom.

Joseph recognised God’s hand in guiding and shaping his life, even in the difficulties. Therefore, his dependence on His supernatural guidance and providence demonstrated how wisely he was living. He actually believed that it was God who had sent him to Egypt to save a life, and even that of his own family (45:5-8; 50:20). God’s wise working in the life of Joseph (on the one hand) and his own actions (on the other) are the backbones of the Joseph story.

So, as revealed in the life and work of Joseph, supernatural wisdom can be an indispensable thread intertwined with the other threads of life.

What about you? Do you depend on the supernatural wisdom in your life your work or study place? What do your colleagues, employer, lecturer, family members say regarding the supernatural wisdom of God in your life? As with Joseph, do you recognise God’s hand in guiding and shaping your life, even in the difficulties?
