Have you ever stopped and thought about how much of an influence music
and song have in our lives? We all have our favourite songs, type of music, and
times when we like to listen to that music or song. We really enjoy some kinds
of music and there are other kinds that well, let’s just say, it’s not for us. But,
we are surrounded by music, either by our own choice or the choice of others,
e.g. shopping center music.
I will often wake in the early hours of the morning, or when I get up in
the morning, singing a song that we have sung on Sunday or that have heard
somewhere. Then other times it is the Bible that I am singing to the Lord. In
actual fact, I woke up this morning singing a song to the Lord, using a popular
tune from a 90’s song, but with words that glorified God. I don’t know why this
happens on such a regular basis, but it just does and I just sing along to the
tune or song in my heart. In fact it has become a part of my life that has had
a pronounced impact on my heart, mind and worldview.
As I was thinking about this this morning, I remembered that the first
part of Psalm 96 says, “Sing a new song to the LORD!” Actually, the Bible
encourages us over and over to do this e.g. Ps 33:3; 40:3; 98:1; 144:9; Is
42:10; Rev 5:9; 14:3. While this is not a command, it is an encouragement to sing
a new song to the Him. In a world when
many of the songs are self-focused, or about the loss of love or trying to find
love of our life, it is nice to be able to sing about and for the Lord.
Do you wake in the early hours of the morning or when you are getting ready
in the morning singing a song that we have sung on Sunday or that you have
heard somewhere? If so, you know what I am saying. However, if you have not had
this happen, why not ask the Spirit of God to start
placing songs in your heart? Maybe you have never desired to sing a new song to
the Lord. Why not intentionally ask Him to give you the desire to praise and
worship Him with a new song each day and be ready to have Him put that new song
in your heart and mind?
Pause in His presence for a moment and think this over…
