Nothing But God! by Michael Podhaczky

There are many things revealed about God in the Scriptures. We know about His love, goodness, grace, and Him being all-powerful just to mention a few. But what about things like the following fantastic features about God?

7 “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? 8 They are as high as the heavens; what can you do? Deeper than Sheol; what can you know? 9 Its measurement is longer than the earth And broader than the sea” (Job 11:7-9 NASB).

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!” (Rom 11:33 NASB).

Do you know that there was a time, before all of creation when God in the unity of His nature, existing in three persons, dwelt alone? He lived outside of all time and space and created both. For example, there were no heavens where His glory is now displayed or earth for His footrest. Likewise, there were no angels to sing His praises or a universe to be maintained by the Word of His power. There was nothing and no one but God. It was not for a day, a year, or centuries but from infinity past.

Throughout this past, God was alone in His unity, i.e. He existed in solitariness as God. Yet, He was not lonely but self-contained, self-sufficient in need of nothing. So, before there was anything; God was solitary, i.e. living alone as He lived in His unity. When He created everything, He added nothing to who He was because He does not change. His essential being and glory can never be improved nor lessen by His creation.

Remember that, God was under no obligation or need to create. Instead, He chose to do so as a sovereign choice,

“He works all things after the counsel of His own will” Eph 1:11.

Paul, in Rom 11:34,35, pointed out that He is far above the way we think about things. For example,

“For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counsellor? Or who has first given to Him, and it shall be recompensed unto Him again.”

The force of this is that it is impossible to bring the Almighty God under obligation to the creature. God owes us nothing and gains nothing from us. But everything that He does is from His grace. Remember that, He cannot be understood, or that cannot be contained by any of our logical boundaries.

Pause in His presence for a moment and think this over…
