In this series of blogs, I have been speaking about the lost art of
silence and solitude. On this matter Stephen W. Smith in His book, Embracing
Soul Care: Making Space for What Matters Most, (p. 121) quoted Francois
Fenelon Bishop of Geneva (1567-1622) as follows,
“How rare it is to find a soul quiet enough to hear God
speak.”
This was at a time when there was no glut of social media and
electronic communication as a distraction. However, every generation has its
distractions from this lost art.
God pointed out to Israel that He was
to be their resting place in quietness,
“This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘Only in
returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and
confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it’” (Is 30:15 NLT)
So, if it is
important to hear God, we need to remember that He is most often not found in
noise, the hustle and bustle and
restlessness of life. It is often in the places of solitude. But, if we are not
willing to come apart with Him for a while, we may come apart; spiritually and
then emotionally, physically and even relationally for a long time.
Pause in His
presence for a moment and think this over…
