If you were to leave a
legacy behind to be remembered by what would it be? That you left enough money
for your family to survive. Or maybe that you had paid off the mortgage. What
about some of those who have gone before us, what legacy did they leave? There
is Mother Teresa, who was famous,
“for selflessly dedicating her life to care for the lepers,
homeless and dying in the slums of Kolkata.”[1]
She has inspired others to follow in her footsteps.
Then there was Nelson Mandela,
“an anti-apartheid
revolutionary who spent his early adult life fighting for equal rights among
Africans… Apartheid was eventually abolished in 1991.”[2]
We might think that we could never be like these people. Well, whether we
are or are not like them, we will leave a legacy.
We will leave one that will linger within our family, our
friends and colleagues etc. They will seek to emulate you or try hard not to do
so. The
write of Proverbs has said that,
“Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in
high esteem is better than silver or gold” (Prov 22:1 NLT).
The legacy of a good name
or reputation is something that those around us can live from when we are gone.
So, let me ask you again, “If you were leave a legacy behind to be remembered
by what would it be?” Your reputation, either good or bad, will have lasting
effects after you have gone.
Pause
in His presence for a moment and think this over…
