In the previous blog, I discussed how Jude revealed
the extent to which false teachers and their teachings were affecting the
church. Now, I would like to look at a word that Jude used to get his point
across to the Christ followers. That word is ‘ungodly.’ He used it strongly to highlight the total depravity of these
false teachers. The word is used thirteen times in the New Testament,
six of these by Jude.
The term referred to these false teachers as evil and
godless. It is reflective of God’s view of these teachers, as Jude wrote under
the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Jude used this word to get the message
across to the readers. His message - that these
false teachers were evil and godless (Jude 1:4), and that they would be judged
as ungodly, committing ungodly deeds, in an ungodly way (Jude 1:15).
Finally, they continued to walk according to their ungodly lusts (Jude 1:18).
As I discussed in a previous
blog,
“The reason is that they do not have the Holy
Spirit living within them because they are not believers, but imposters.’ So,
be aware and watchful for these false teachers, as you will know them by their
fruit.
You may be thinking how can I be
aware of such false teachers, if they can lead so many astray? Jude gives the answer
is vv20-21 when he said,
20 “But you, dear
friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of
the Holy Spirit, 21 and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in
God’s love” (Jude 20-21 NLT).
