I
heard the story of a boyfriend who, while using FaceTime, persuaded his
girlfriend to take a naked photo of herself and send it to him. When he broke
up with her he put the photo on Facebook. The photo ended up on a porn site
somewhere in cyberspace.
No,
this really happened.
So,
let me ask you, ‘Do you know the personal, social and economic implications of
the Digital Age that can affect your life and conversation?’ As a Christ-follower
you can actually be part of the communication technology superhighway and use
it for the glory of God. The important thing is using it in the right way, and
not allowing it to use you.
Let’s look at some of the personal, social implications of
not using the communication technology for the glory of God.
a. Sexting
Sexting is a term created by the media, meaning “…sending
provocative or sexual photos, messages or videos, using a mobile phone, but it
can also include posting this type of material online.”[1]
Some private and social implications of sexting:[2]
· Once the images and messages are sent,
they can often spread rapidly
· If posted online, they are almost
impossible to control
· They can cause embarrassment now and in
the future
· Family, friends, future partners and
employers may have access to them
· It
can lead to cyber-bullying, sexual harassment or at its extreme, assault
Is there safe sexting? No, there is no such thing as safe
sexting! But, you can choose not to go down
that road and get caught up in the enemy’s web. Instead choose to use the
communication technology in a wholesome manner. As a Christ-follower, only upload
material that you would be comfortable for anyone to view.
b. Netiquette
and
Internet Bullying
Communication
technology can be used to harm and disrespect, causing damage to others. This
may lead to psychological, emotional or reputation consequences for both the
offenders and victims, even to the point of suicide. Too many
use the net with an attitude of bitterness, explosive rage, anger, harsh words,
and intentions of slandering others.
But, you can behave in a way that would bring glory
of God, i.e. using manners, instead of insults, swearing, rumours etc. Remember
that you need to glorify your heavenly Father when using any communication
technology and,
5 “Live wisely
among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be
gracious and attractive (seasoned with salt) so that you will have the
right response for everyone” (Col 4:5-6 NLT).
Pause
in His presence for a moment and think this over… To be continued.
