Fixing Our Eyes On Jesus by Ps Jim Jung

The writer of the Book of Hebrews tells us that we are to “fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1-3).

I learnt a valuable lesson a few years ago when my son and I rode our motor bikes through the beautiful countryside of Vietnam. I’ve never been a road bike rider but I quickly learnt that whatever my eyes were fixed on, my wheels were destined to follow. Especially coming into a corner. If my eyes were fixed on the coming verge, I was in trouble. I learnt that I needed to already be focused on the new direction of the road, looking ahead, which would allow me to naturally and easily take the bend.

There’s a great deal going on in our world today that can capture our attention. You only need to connect with any news service at the moment to have some tension, disaster or conflict highlighted to you. It’s not always easy to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. If we were honest with one another, many of us would say that often our eyes are fixed on anything but Jesus. Instead, we often find ourselves starring at our circumstances, our relationships, our financial stresses, that doctors report or perhaps even the mistakes of our past. And even though those issues are as real as that concrete barrier ahead of my motor bike, if they become my sole focus, I will crash.

God has been promising his people since the beginning that he would always be with us. In Deuteronomy 31:6 he says:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The Apostle Peter says:

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NLT).

So no matter what curb in the road is confronting you, no matter what personal, global or local issue is causing you to be terrified and afraid, God calls us to do something – trust Him. Fix our eyes, our faith, our trust, our prayers and our belief onto Him. He is in control and He will see you through the curb as you fix your eyes on Him.
