Have you ever stopped and thought about your brain,
and how wonderful it is? It is an amazing creation that has not been matched by
us as hard as we try. But what about when it’s not well with you, and you
suffer from mental health? When things are not functioning properly, it can be
a serious matter. One thing that helped me not to give up at times like this was to remember something Paul pointed out regarding our physical body (our brain included),
“That is why we never give up. Though
our bodies are dying, our spirits are being
renewed every day” (2 Cor 4:16 NLT).
It can be quite frustrating when
our mental health is not what is was or
should be. Nevertheless, Paul gives us a
measure of hope here. I don’t know about you, but when I am having one of those days
or seasons it can be hard to keep what Paul has said in proper perspective. I
need His Word to help remind me, His Spirit to comfort and help me through, and
my brothers and sisters in Christ to encourage me to keep going.
Since
our brains are amazing creations, it is
important not to take them for granted. But as Christ-followers, when having
one of those days or seasons, we need to stop long enough to hear the worship
of God in the creation around us. We need to help and encourage those around us who find
themselves in this place or season to do the same. As the church, we need to be a place where love and
acceptance can be found for those in a
hard or dark place. If you have a mental health issue, can I encourage you to
go to the next level in worshiping our heavenly Father? Look around and see
God’s great work. Then again if you know someone who is struggling, why not
gently read His Word to them, ask His Spirit to comfort and help them through, and as a brother or sister in Christ encourage them to keep going.
