How would you answer a friend,
neighbour, son or daughter, husband or wife if they asked you the following
question as a Christ-follower?
“Why
would anyone bother spending time and energy thinking and studying about how to
love others as God loves us?”
Now we could answer something like the
following,
“We
do this to try to understand what the Bible has to say regarding the love of
God for people and how we are to love each other in the same way.”
However,
could you point them to some biblical basis for your
reasoning? That is, to help them see what the Bible has to say on the matter
and that you are not just making this up.
For example, you may point them towards
some of the following,
Paul shared his longing for the local
church at Philippi to flourish in love. It was the love that flowed from their knowledge
and understanding of a loving God, Phil 1:9-11. We all know that many Christ-followers think they can grow in
love without this engaging with knowledge and understanding of God. But the truth
of the matter is, that for our love to be
real, we need to see what the best and most pure love is to be able to give it away. We all need to be continually growing
in knowledge and depth of understanding of God’s love so that we can love as He loves us.
It
is a privilege and responsibility as Christ-follower in our relationship with our
Heavenly Father to know and understand this love and how to love like God. If we
want a challenge, then we can actively seek to know and understand the love of God.
Then we can enthusiastically look for opportunities to love those around us genuinely. If we are keen to do this daily,
then we will be surprised at the openings to love those that come our way
Pause
in His presence for a moment and think this over…
