Life can be full of incredible surprises. The moments when
all you can do is stand in wondrous awe. In the last blog, it was mentioned that
it could be enlightening to watch an infant experience the world around them as
they are excitingly open to exploration. However, we can tend to degrade things
around us, losing the colour and only see things in shades of grey.
It has been said by
Abraham Joshua Heschel that,
“I would say about individuals: an individual dies when they
cease to be surprised. What keeps me alive — spiritually, emotionally,
intellectually — is my ability to be surprised. I say I take nothing for
granted. I am surprised every morning that I see the sunshine again. When I see
an act of evil, I am not accommodated — I don’t accommodate myself to the
violence that goes on everywhere. I’m still surprised. That’s why I’m against
it; why I can fight against it. We must learn how to be surprised, not to adjust
ourselves. I am the most maladjusted person in society.”[1]
When was the last time
you were surprised by what our heavenly Father has done? As Herschel said, we
need to “learn how to be surprised, not to adjust ourselves.” We all have stuff
going on around us that can either make us see life as grey or in multicolour
tones that are amazing. So, in light of what you are going through right now,
could you do as the Psalmist says,
“Let the whole world fear the LORD, and let everyone stand
in awe of Him” (Ps 33:8 NLT).
Pause
in His presence for a moment and think this over…
